How one teen won the battle against obesity

Fresh off a vacation to visit family in El Salvador, Alberto “Bert” Hidalgo-Robert sat in disbelief in a doctor’s office in Palo Alto, California. At just 13-years-old, he had been diagnosed as a pre-diabetic teen with high blood pressure, high triglycerides and high cholesterol. Having tipped the scale at 230 pounds at 5’6”, Alberto swallowed the lump in this throat at the news. Would he end up like his dear grandmother, whose stomach was scarred with purple marks due to daily insulin shots? Would he, “El Gordito”, as the first grandchild, also be the first to die?
